Garnet - the January Birthstone

Garnet - the January Birthstone

The name Garnet originates from the latin word Granatus, meaning grain or seed, because of its likeness to the pomegranate seed.

There are many types of Garnet; Almandine, which is brownish red, is the most commonly known Garnet, but there is also Pyrope - deep red, Hessonite - brown to orange, Rhodolite - purplish red, Tsavorite - deep green, and Demantoid - dark apple green - to name a few.

Garnet symbolizes fire, faith, truth, grace, constancy, fidelity. It is thought to be good for rheumatism and arthritis, and for prostate and other imbalances of the generative system.

In ancient times red Garnet was thought to cure fever and promote good health. It was often worn as a talisman for protection while traveling, and to protect the wearer from bad dreams. Some Asiatic tribes once used Garnets instead of bullets during battle, as they were believed to be more deadly.
