The word Sapphire was derived from the Latin Sapphirus, and the Greek Sappheiros, both meaning dear to the planet Saturn. Long considered the symbol for truth and constancy, Sapphire protected Kings and Potentates against harm and envy. The ancient Persians believed the Earth rested on a great Sapphire - the reflection of which gave the sky its blue color.

The star Sapphire was called the stone of destiny. The three chatoyant bands forming the star represented faith, hope and charity. It was supposed to bring good fortune to its owner, even after the stone has passed from his/her hands.

Blue is just one of many colors that occur in Sapphire - the mineral Corrundum. It also occurs in Orange (Padparasha - a very prized color), purple, green, yellow, pink - just about every color except for red - which is known as Ruby. The hardness of Sapphire is 9 on the Mohs scale (diamond is 10), thereby making it a good choice for engagement rings - such as the one Princess Diana wore.
